go internet community go!
A few months ago, Angelia suffered a fire in her Virginia-based studio/handmade goods shoppe - the red thread studio . You can read more about it right here .
Basically, she lost all of her stock, so Design for Mankind is leading a fundraiser to help her recoop her merchandise and get the shoppe back in order. We'd love to raise $3,000 in order to support her efforts and, in turn, support the handmade community.
I've donated some underdog ink merch - and there's a TON of great art by great artists available! There are a few donation tiers, offering free handmade goods and artwork for any $5+ donation that's received. See it all here . go. support. help.
this post will contain all the random things i've been meaning to post about but have been forgetting.....
ONE::

my former studio mate makes beautiful things [and installs them for other people]. above are his spiffed out sawhorses [what is it about sawhorses that is so appealing?? i want a pair of these, but with galvanized accents instead of bronze.... if only...] i have been hounding him to get his website together for gosh i don't know - like 5 YEARS?? well - we finally did it.
christopherfaiss.com
TWO::
i keep forgetting to mention that i have been in more dialogue videos. the last two were on niche: friend or for [with pia ] and this week social networking [with kate and will ]. i have a hard time watching myself, but i watch the videos to see what other people say. i kind of close my eyes when i'm onscreen and then re-open them when i don't hear my voice anymore. i always feel like i'm saying the dumbest stuff.
THREE::
my origami mobile was featured in cafe mom today. thanks sheri
FOUR::
the mixtape zine giveaway w/ my birdie on the cover is still going... till tomorrow.... [what i love about give-a-ways is all the new people you meet online]
FIVE::
4 random polaroids from Japan. i did say i'd post more of those, right? these are all the cute things in front of stores and in parks [and that i always seem to shoot on the left side of the frame??? why is that?]

bye for now.

i think this is my all time fav polaroid from my trip. it might be my all time fav polaroid i've taken in quite some time. we were on a walk and this was a liquor store. the boys ran in to get something to drink [maybe it was pocari sweat?] and some cigarettes and i just looked up and got excited. and then the picture came OUT. ah.
of course you don't really know it's japan - but who cares.

the runner up fav polaroid is this one. more fake flowers. there were fake flowers hanging everywhere it seemed!

this is where you "purify" yourself before entering the meiji temple/shrine. i want those long handled wooden "spoons"...

a vintage bench.
and just because i happen to think my 2 fav polaroids go together....

i actually still have more japan polaroids - so maybe i'll have a post roid week fest next week since i scanned them all :D.
posting everyday is hard. not really my speed these days. have a good friday !!
the last of the polaroids this week here . bye polaroid week... i'll miss you.

wooden buckets. the bird motif in the crest is so cool. simple, but pretty. these were in asakusa...

we walked through a more working class neighborhood with our friends who lived on the outskirts of tokyo. there was a machine shop/repair place with these tins. each one brimming with nails or scraps or some other thing. stacked and stacked and stacked.

there really are a lot of coi fish in japan. :O sometimes i get a bit freaked out when they all converge on some food. too many wiggly things mouths agape... but they also are really pretty. i liked hunting for the rare white one ....
happy thurs. long live the polaroid. more here

around the corner from hotel in japan was a housewares store. aren't the brooms cute?

crates of kirin waiting to be emptied and filled outside of a restaurant.

there's a mall by the water in tokyo that has a "vintage" floor. it's like 1950's-70's japan in there. there's one area that has old video games, etc. that's where these shots came from.

there were cherry blossoms in every park we visited. it was pretty amazing. lovely to see something so delicate interacting with the landscape.

this time we stayed in a "japanese" style room - so we couldn't wear shoes in the room and we had a traditional bath. every night a woman came in and set up our futon beds for the night.... and there were traditional paper/wood room dividers.

on the left is the bowling alley in asakusa. on the right are streamers of paper cranes.... i just like how the colors match.
have a good tuesday! remember - more polaroids here

![taco [octopus] stand](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3587/3501585171_c33d1e554a.jpg)
these were taken in asakusa last spring. one of my greatest pleasures while traveling is to take polaroids. they are instantly nostalgic. the colors - the framing. it's really like capturing a little moment in time that then lives on in a little square. of course they feel very different than digital shots but it think they vary even from regular film. there is just nothing like watching an image emerge before your eyes...
asakusa has a big old temple that many people go to visit - and the surrounding area has a ton of tourist stalls and shops that sell "traditional" wares. the first shot is of a stall yet to open. the second is of the fake cherry blossoms that were hanging on almost every lampost [it was cherry blossom season]. there was also a festival at the temple when we visited. the 3 shot is of a "taco" stand. in this case taco is octopus. i'm not a huge fan, but my husband ate them. 3 little baby octopi on a stick. our companion was grossed out by it. heh heh.

here are 3 of my big shot tests. it's such an awkward camera [in a good way, but it's still odd]. it's big - cumbersome - and you have to line up your image in your viewfinder [there's a mirror so you get 2 images] in order for it to be in focus. i think i'm making it harder on myself by not shooting many people as subjects. [pets are hard to get to sit still against a plain background]. you've got to be about 4 feet away from your subject - so you can't crop the same way you can in other cameras.... being a fan of parameters i like this fact, but it can make some shots difficult [i had to lay on the ground to get the clothespins to focus]
i do like the expired fuji film blue, though....
this has been the week of miscommunication. wrong things said at the wrong time to different people under different circumstances. not that there's been any huge disasters, but i'm finding it tiring. it's stupid things like a print client referring to one image using a description where i think they are referring to another. of course there's a deadline, and they couldn't provide everything on time, so the whole job feels tense.... oh well. i'm hoping it's just this week.
i'm thinking a root beer float might make me feel better. it's SUPER hot here today. i'm off to the studio. that might make me feel better too. as long as i don't miscommunicate with myself....

FOUR.
um. i feel out of blog practice. my laptop came back [but now has a red random pixel on the screen. i have to take it back, but i'm not ready to give it up again so soon].... and then i got really really sick. flu sick. sick in some of the hottest weather we've had here.... there is something really not nice about being sick in sticky hot weather. it really feels like punishment.
on the other hand... i turned in my grades. so i'm officially done teaching. this has been one of the hardest years ever for me in terms of teaching and keeping it all together. so it feels good to have a summer of not teaching. i like what i'm going to teach in the fall [JUST 2 classes!] and so i really want to tweek the syllabi and come back refreshed.
anyway.... news? i do have some

i'm in this book! along with people like matthew barney and ghada amer [and a whole long list of others]. in a 100 years i never would have thought my work would be amongst pages that contained their work. it's very humbling.
amisha YOUR piece is the image they used !!!!
anyway - the book is on amazon.
and the FOUR? well... believe it or not.... june marks the fact that i've been blogging for four years. how did that happen?? and in honor of that i feel like i should have one of those leave a comment and you'll win something giveaways. i'm not sure exactly what you'll win but i'll throw in a funny wool pompom ring

in colors of your choice. and maybe a tote or a T from underdog? so yeah. leave comment. random winner will be selected next monday July 1st.
thanks for reading. for being my friends. for your support and interest and to stop from just going all mushy i'll just say you guys are darn swell.....
more news this week. three shows are coming up quick!

jan9-nashville [we ate at a great restaurant that still had a tree up]

for good health [in the arcade in nashville - the funky bathroom]

send me a letter [also in the arcade... this one is just better in person - it's really dark and sad and doesn't translate when scanned]

pink reach

i hate everyone - and i hate you [guess who this is? he's never appeared here before, but was OK w/ me posting this pic!]
have a great weekend. i'm almost done teaching. under a mound of grading. countdown to my summer....
