a domestic life :: 06 :: cupcake

a domestic life 6.... the cutest cupcake brought to me by rori of paper monkey press . she just moved to the east coast. we're working on a new website for her. a more "grown-up" version of what they have now.

in this drawing i think it's funny how i changed the view. it's like i grew taller than i was when i took the photo. the perspective is off. my favorite part is the sprinkles. they were fun to paint.

onto news::

1. i have a piece up for auction tomorrow night. another great local arts organization - The Intersection for the Arts - is having their annual shin-dig. i donated a small cozied target. you can learn about the auction and even buy pieces NOW by going here

2. GIVE A WAY

mixtape zine cover

remember the cover of mixtape that i posted about a bit ago... well... i got copies and it's a great issue. instructions on how to crochet dish clothes, crafting with kids, a cute calendar, a feature on paper cut artist tina tarnoff, etc, etc, etc, [the list of contributors is too long for me to type here today - my fingers are not typing well today. so many slip ups!]

you can buy your own copy here and you can learn more about the zine here .

i have a couple of extras. so if you want one - comment. a winner [maybe winners] will be announced next Wed. the 17th....

and that's all she typed [since i'm spending 1/2 my time deleting my typos]. have a GREAT weekend

it's polaroid week folks. and i'm participating. yay.

blue man

fake blossoms

taco [octopus] stand

these were taken in asakusa last spring. one of my greatest pleasures while traveling is to take polaroids. they are instantly nostalgic. the colors - the framing. it's really like capturing a little moment in time that then lives on in a little square. of course they feel very different than digital shots but it think they vary even from regular film. there is just nothing like watching an image emerge before your eyes...

asakusa has a big old temple that many people go to visit - and the surrounding area has a ton of tourist stalls and shops that sell "traditional" wares. the first shot is of a stall yet to open. the second is of the fake cherry blossoms that were hanging on almost every lampost [it was cherry blossom season]. there was also a festival at the temple when we visited. the 3 shot is of a "taco" stand. in this case taco is octopus. i'm not a huge fan, but my husband ate them. 3 little baby octopi on a stick. our companion was grossed out by it. heh heh.

you can see more polaroids by clicking here

s t i l l {body} :: day 4

s t i l l .
yesterday i got a pedicure. this is because we leave tomorrow to attend a wedding over the weekend. a friend gave me a gift certificate to a spa. i love being pampered like that. luxury.

so i wanted to shoot my feet. but i also wanted blurr. especially because it was early. and blurr somehow is equaling s t i l l for me [i was thinking of uta barth , but of course i can't compare].

i'm also s t i l l over here

so no post for me here tomorrow.... but there will be one on poppytalk. [hello to any new readers from there].

today was a long day. we discussed the "meaning" of art - or rather how all art has meaning - or rather how i won't let students simply say: "my work has no meaning" or "i want the viewer to come up with their own meaning" [this is a big pet peeve of mine]. also had a critique in my drawing class. i love seeing how the students have progressed. it never ceases to amaze me how in the span of weeks they can go from being afraid to make a mark on a page to taking big risks and solving big problems and understanding how to use color, line, shape and value to their best advantage. many of them still don't trust that their work is good unless it's "realistic", but i think we convinced one person today that his view of the world via drawing was compelling because of [not despite] its lack of "accuracy".

ok. i guess i had more to say than i thought. have a lovely weekend. see you next week!

good morning. i hope everyone had a good weekend.

the ├╝ber talented martha put out a call for s t i l l photos this week. the twist for this go around is that she wants you to incorporate a body part. instructions and examples are at the end of this post .

i'm not very good at including people [let alone myself] in my photos... so i thought i would give it a whirl. here's my shot from early this morning.

holiday card :: underdog ink

i uploaded my holiday cards to underdog this weekend. above was my personal card from last year. designs from years past are also available. [i can't stop making the skaters . there are also some T's SUPER reduced if you are up for taking a gander.

finally... i'm guest posting at one of my all time favorite blogs this week poppytalk . i tried to highlight some stores/galleries that i really love. all my posts together can be found here

because of the guest posting i might be a little quiet over here. thinking maybe i'll try and post a picture every day? a little challenge to myself.

have a great week!

quick fix

this photo has nothing to do with the post, but what's a post w/out a photo? i just added elastic to my green shoes that kept falling off my feet. i couldn't be happier. elastic is an underrated substance me thinks....

so i was tagged by my fellow oakland artist katrina ... and i haven't done a meme in awhile so here goes... i'm not going to tag anyone, but if you want to play along, please consider this a tag

1. what were you doing 10 years ago?
wow. can i think back that far?? 10 years ago i was working for a gallery in down town san francisco. i was making some drawings that would lead to the work that i used to apply to grad school with. we were just starting to think about looking for a house for ourselves and out pets because we were going to loose the house we were renting.

2. what are five things on your list to do today?
1. catch up on emails
2. order flowers and a book for folks
3. finish mending a target for an upcoming show
4. write a blog post
5. work on my syllabi for upcoming classes

3. snacks you enjoy
lately i've been VERY into popcorn. i can't seem to get enough. also loving all the peaches, plums, apricots and berries that are in season. and yogurt. i've been on a serious yogurt kick. almost one a day. [if i'm feeling indulgent i'll allow myself a cream top yogurt. yum]

4. places you have lived
by far this is the most boring aspect of my life. i'm a california girl. i was born and thus lived in tuscon, AZ, but really i've only lived in los angeles, santa barbara and the bay area - berkeley and oakland

5. what are 5 things you would do if you were a billionaire
oh this is hard.... that would open up so many things..... ok let's give it a whirl.
1. i would buy a building and set up a non-profit art space with a gallery and artists studios - all the rent would be subsidised and below market rate. i'd have facilities for the artists to use [like a wood shop, foundry, etc]. i'd also set up an outreach for youth - offering afterschool classes to supplement the non-existent art education in schools.
2. have my mom and dad totally retire [unless they wanted to do some kind of work for "fun"] and send them on a very long all expenses paid trip to where ever they wanted. AND either buy them a home [and make it really green] or update their current home anyway they desired. [i know my mom wants hard wood floors]. sort of along the same lines i'd do the same for me and my husband in terms of housing. either move or greenify our current house [and i guess it'd be easy to build a studio in my yard now with that kind of cashola]
3. buy lots and lots of art from struggling emerging artists that deserve support
4. support good causes like animal rescues, finding alternative fuel sources, organic farming, cultivate some bee hives
5. go on vacations to all the places that i've dreamed of seeing and never have [paris, morraco, berlin, vietnam, spain, portugal, sweden, etc. etc. etc.]

i think this list could get longer....

hmm...

been thinking a lot lately about things UNDER the surface. things that you can't necessarily see, but are there. for all of us. and how little things - things that you can wear [like rings], or smell, or see - can remind you those you love, miss, or memories....

go read the jargon of authenticity by eireann. i love her thoughts on language and the words we choose to use....

back on friday with a show announcement!

in the middle

hi. i guess a week has passed. i don't want to complain. i feel so lucky and blessed. i'm just tired. and feel run down. but soon soon soon i will have some more time to myself and i think i'll be able to use my brain again. i hope so.

in the meantime... i was lucky - so lucky - enough to meet amy ross on friday for breakfast. her show at rare device should not be missed. we had one of those heart to heart talks about life, art, showing, hopes, blogs, regrets, dreams... i hope our paths cross again soon amy!

the above image is for martha's flickr group s t i l l . ahhh. brilliant idea [but of course - it's from martha!]

hope your monday is coming to a lovely close....

and one last happy birthday to shari...
